Microspheres South Africa

Light Weight Ceramic Microspheres

High Performance, High Quality

Microspheres South Africa has been recovering, processing and distributing cenospheres locally and abroad since 1999.

Cenospheres are hollow ceramic microspheres that are a by-product of coal burning power plants. When pulverized coal is burned at power plants fly ash is produced. Cenospheres are the lighter particles that are contained within the fly ash, and make up only 0.1% – 1% of the fly ash.

The color and physical properties of cenospheres depend on the composition of the coal used and the furnace temperature of the power plant. We are fortunate that our conditions are such that near-white, high quality cenospheres are formed, and have been consistently formed for the past decade.

Cenospheres have undergone many tests which has proven their status as having a valuable contribution to manufacturing.

Advantages

The use of Cenolite® is not only as a lightweight filler, the advantages are as diverse as improved thermal insulation and fire resistance, reduced curing shrinkage and weight reduction. Cenolite® can also improve flow and workability in a range of applications.

Due to its low density, Cenolite® is significantly lighter than traditional fillers. This reduces the weight of the finished product, resulting in savings in transport costs of raw material and end products.

For our future and for the survival of our planet we all need to reduce our carbon footprint and make environmentally responsible choices. Cenolite® is a by-product and therefore has a very low carbon footprint. It is also non-toxic, non-hazardous and harmless to the environment.

Cenolite® has a high melting point of  around 1200 degrees Celsius which makes it useful in many refractory and high temperature applications. Its near vacuum interior also provides good thermal insulating properties.

The inert nature of Cenolite® makes it resistant to acids, alkalis and environmental degradation. Cenolite® also will not interfere with the chemistry of products into which it is incorporated, which makes it suitable for virtually any application and binder system.

The spherical shape of Cenolite® improves product workability, raw material flow and reduces shrinkage. It also reduces resin or water demand due to its low absorption level and high packing factor. Due to the spherical shape it also has very high compressive strength.

Applications

Cenolite® is a lightweight hollow ceramic spherical filler and has a multitude of applications due to its unique properties. These beneficial properties of Cenolite® enable manufacturers to improve their products in a wide range of industries.

Our Products

We produce two main grades of Cenolite®. We can however produce any custom grade depending on your requirements.

Cenolite® 90w is a speciality grade used mainly in the paint and coatings industry, where the particle size needs to be small. This grade also undergoes a thorough washing process to remove any ash residue, thereby obtaining a white colour.

Cenolite® 300 is our standard grade and is used in most applications. The particle size is bigger and the colour is slightly off-white.
